“Caladrius!” the princess cried. “Stop! You don’t have to do this!”

He snickered. “Of course I do, brat. It’s why I’m still alive, after all.”

“What if I really am telling the truth about Adam? You think he’d be happy knowing you did in his best friend?”

“I’ll just say it was an ‘accident.’ Like mother, like daughter.”

“Unbelievable. You’re such a jerkface.”

“Hope you’re okay with those being your last words, princess. Now, die!”

He swung the blade of spectral fire. Before it could sever her head from her neck, a glaring light irradiated the ravine.

“Gah!” he cried, dropping the weapon at his side. “What…what is that?”

She ambushed him and smacked him in the jaw with an electric fist. The impact let out a nice, satisfying “crack” and sent him flipping and swirling through the air. His body skipped across the spiky stones and bones. A bolt of lightning bound across the sky, and she was already on top of him. She assaulted him with a bombardment of lightning-enhanced blows.

He twitched under her weight, his handsome face covered in bruises. He held out a hand and summoned his weapon. As it flew closer, Cass batted it aside like it was a harmless house fly. She raised a fist to the heavens. Her grandfather sent a bolt of lightning down upon her, charging her like a deadly battery. She roared and struck her nemesis in the chest.

Thunder boomed after her mighty punch landed. Boulders broke apart and gave way as he was sent deeper into the earth. His battered and spasming body lay in the center of a huge crater.

“How’s that?” she said, wiping her hands. “I told you at the academy that if you crossed me, I’d see how deep of a crater I could make out of your body.”

“Not bad,” he said, wheezing from below. “But you only won ‘cause I got distracted by that pillar of light.”

She turned toward the pillar and grinned. “Thank you, Iskios.”

“Iskios? Oh, that angel boy. I should’ve known.”

“How’d you do it? How’d you copy my magic?”

His face contorted into a serpentine sneer. “One of the ‘perks’ of selling my soul to the Furies. Whatever you hit me with, I can send back at you and in an even stronger form.”

“Good to know for next time.”

“‘Next time?’ Why don’t you just put me out of my misery, brat? Right here, right now.”

“Partly because I pity you, peasant. But mostly because I wouldn’t want to make Adam cry.”

“So she lied. My baby brother’s still around. That’s a relief.”

“Who lied? Who’re you talking about?”

He coughed and put on a mocking smirk. “Oh, you’ll find out soon enough, princess. As they say, ‘Keep your friends close…’”

“Whatever. I’ve got bigger fish to fry right now with all these assassins on my tail, anyway.”

“Brat…can do me a favor?”

“Who are you to make any demands from me? You literally came within an inch of cutting my head off.”

“Take care of my brother, will ya?”

“Now that is a favor I can agree to.”

He choked on his laughter.
